I worked with Hyatt Resort for 5 years. God gifted us then with a baby girl born in 1983. We have a pair of cute and beautiful children. My wife resigned to look afer the children.
In 1984 , my ex General Manager who worked at Ming Court Hotel ( 447 rooms) Jalan Ampang Kuala Lumpur offered me a position as Front Office Assistant Manager. I was happy as it was one of the biggest hotels at that time. We have to move to Kuala Lumpur and rented a house at Taman Cempaka Kampung Pandan. A year later I was given an opportunity to be a Sales Executive in Sales And Marketing Department. My immediate Chinese boss known as AA a "FU MANCHU" look a like was a very strict boss. A very detailed and very persuasive person and I learnt a lot from him. My job was to get business for the hotel , making daily sales calls to Government Department, Corporate Companies etc. My working partner or my first GURU in Sales at that time was Sivabalan Sabaratnam, who was "half Lawyer" studied law in UK but ended as Sales Executive. I had the opportunity to travel to East Malaysia and Brunei for the first time meeting key personnels to stay at Ming Court. I remembered when Siva and I were running out of cash in Miri. We have to take a non airconditioned, seasoned bus from Kuala Belait to Brunei together with locals in the bus with their shopping items, salted fish, live chickens etc sat together with them. ., the smell ? just immagine ! for few hours we have to hold our breath !!
During my sales calls back in KL , I was lucky meeting a Director from MARA who granted me a loan to further my study. I was sent to Institute Of Tourism & Hotel Management Salzburg, Austria, Europe. I never expected a drop out like me to go that far !!!
I left for Austria (taken a year leave from Ming Court) leaving my wife and 2 children. So lucky my late father in law, my brothers and sister willing to support my family during my study. When I first landed at Frankfurt Germany airport a transit to Salzburg, I didn't believe myself, after years of leaving school, I have to study again, OVERSEAS pulak tu !!! A kampong boy will make it good here!!
Honestly, I had a mixed feeling, choosing a career and a family. But then.. some says ...opportunity will come once !! I had difficulties for few days as my landlord didn't speak English (maybe didn't want to) She spoke only German (Deutch) . Anyway after 3 months, I was able to communicate in "broken" Deutch, what an achievement !!!. To "improve" (any better reasons??) my Deutch, I had a local girlfriend Claudia, who worked in an Intersparr (supermarket). We used to meet and always together in her yellow volkwagen going round salzburg or Freilassings a small town at German border. In college German and French languages, beside other subjects were taught. It was quite difficult to pickup and understand the subjects especially the hotel accounting procedures, food and beverages costings and languages. Other subjects quite easy for me as I had few years experience working in hotels. Beside there were friends from 34 countries , Africa, Turkey, South Africa, Egypt, Pakistan, India, China, Myanmmar, Thailand etc etc... helping out and study together. The lacturers were very helpful as they wanted all of us to pass and bring back the "Diplome" back home. While in Austria, we were taken to trips to capital city , Vienna, Italy, and Germany . After all we were students and didn't have much cash to make trips to other countries.
After completing the course and I passed with merits, time to come home!! upon reaching the Sultan Abdul Aziz airport my wife with our 2 children were there waiting. With ciggrette in my mouth I ran to them forgetting it was month of Ramadhan!!! (no wonder people are smilling !!!) . The children were a bit shy, the boy was already 4 years and the girl was 2 years old.
I rested with my family for few days and went back to Ming Court to get back my job. I was offered a position of Banquet Operations Executive instead as my former position had been filled. I didn't really keen on the job and stayed for a year. One day I met a Swiss Guy at the hotel lobby. I spoke in Deutch and he was impressed !!! not knowing he was the General Manager of newly opened 6 stars resort at Penang "The Penang Mutiara Beach Resort". He wrote me a letter thanking me for my hospitality and cc it to my General Manager ! While in Austria, my Fu Manchu boss had left Ming Court and joined "The Penang Mutiara Beach Resort" what a coincident !! He heard that I came back and called me one day and offered me a job as Sales Manager incharge of Government accounts, Germany and some part of Europe. This was the best offer so far !!!.
My first overseas trip with Mutiara was Berlin Germany Attending an international exibition called ITB Berlin. Then I kept on travelling to London World Travel Market (WTM) , America IT&ME Chicago, BIT Milan, Italy, BTF Brussels, PATA Vienna, Roadshows to Midwest of America St Louis etc., Australia, and most parts of Asia. Then, I had a new hobby..... going to Casinos ! though I didn't really played much but then I ended losing most of the time !
I kept on travelling !!! neglecting the family because of the tight schedules. I became workcoholic, came back home late nights entertaining clients, and sometimes being naughty "Curi Makan" lah . I was involved with a hostess at the lobby lounge!!! We travelled to Singapore together and relationshiop began!! I also felt in love with a chinese lady at accounts department !! What a Romeo was I !!??? My wife knew and she just kept it to herself, what a lady she was !!! At that time we already had 4 children, 3 boys and a daughter.
I worked for 5 years at The Penang Mutiara before I met Operations Director of Impiana Resort Cherating in Berlin. He offered me a job as Director Of Sales at Kuala Lumpur Sales Office, money was very good at that time which I cannot refused. Time to move to Kuala Lumpur again!!! I worked for few years but then then my luck started to fade. I was involved with friends who fancied Genting Highlands which I cannot resist. I spent most of the time going to Genting with him. My monthly income was considered much but half of it gone at Genting!! Again I neglected the family, and at that time I already had 5 children , 3 boys and 2 daughters. I lost my job with Impiana as I used to come late, sleepy, tired and stressed !!!
To live, I followed few friends doing odds job in TV productions, Malay Drama etc. Things didn't work well. My friend just took advantage of me, using my secondhand BMW for his drama but didn't pay me. I met another friends who wish to invest for me doing discount cards and packages for travellers going to hotels and Resorts. It lasted for few months, business was good, before the company expending, the money were gone as my partners were " Kaki Dangdut". Every nights they spent most of the income to book the GROs. I left the company as my partners were not keeping their promises to concentrate on the business.
Luckily, I was offered a job as Director Of Sales at Primula Beach Resort Trengganu based in Kuala Lumpur Sales Office at Angkasa Raya , but travelled to Trengganu as and when needed. I worked for few years but one day I heard the resort was for sales. I was lucky again that I was offered a job as Executive Assistant Manager at Langkawi Holiday Villa. I was give an accommodation at the resort but my family was staying at my wife's brother inlaw's rented house in Alor Setar. Life was good and I travelled every weekend to Alor Setar and sometimes my family will join me at Langkawi.
After about 3 years with Langkawi Holiday Villa, I was promoted to Resident Manager of newly opened Alor Setar Holiday Villa. I was very excited and happy as my rented house was just 5 minutes from the hotel. As time passed by, I met a lady who just worked at Majlis Perbandaran Kedah the office just next door as Computer Programmer. We became close friend as she's alone in Alor Setar, the boy friend worked in Kuala Lumpur and her parents were in Penang. We used to go out to Karaoke and Makan makan . Alor Setar is a small town and people knew who and who and the our relationship was known to most people in Alor Setar and especially my wife. She get annoyed and started suspicious whenever I went out eventhough back to the see the hotel operations at night. Things became worst, as my lady hotel owner came to know and transferred me back to Langkawi. At this stage, my wife was not talking much !!! and the relationship became sour !
Back at Langkawi, my lady boss appointed an Executive Manager an Italian, who drunk every nights to be my immediate boss. I was not happy with the new arrangements, and started to question her. I was charged "insubornation" with internal enquiries and decided to terminate my service. However I made a report with Labour Office and was paid a 6 months salary.
With the money, I opened up a small warung right infront of Langkawi Holiday Villa. Business was good. My wife didn't come anymore to visit me, but my lady friend became closer as she just broke off from her boy friend . She became my girlfriend. We planned to get married but then my wife was still my wife came one day and had a big fight with my girl friend. I decided to get away from Langkawi to "save face" with the langkawi Folks with my girl friend to Kuala Lumpur leaving my wife and children. It was the greatest mistake that I had made.
We rented a flat at Dato Keramat, being jobless both of us contacted few friends. " Friend in need is a friend indeed". My girl friend managed to work with my old friend who ran an AVON boutique. Being an educated lady, my girl friend was not comfortable working with "Ciput" salary. I was trying here and there to get job. Luckily Wet World a Theme Park needed a Resident Manager at Kota Tinggi Waterfalls , Johore, I applied and got the job.
I moved to Kota Tinggi Johore, but my girl friend refused to join me as the resort was left quite sometimes ago and very quiet as there was no guests yet. She fancied city life .I worked for 6 months, but the management decided to terminate me with no good reasons given. I was jobless again with little fund in my hand I went to Kuantan. Lucky me... Hyatt Kuantan needed an Associate Director Of Business Development I applied and got the job. My immediate boss was a lady and I can't work closely with her. Most of the times, we had differences. After 6 months, I was not confirmed on my job as I expected and Jobless again !!!
I went round, reading newspapers, looking for other jobs but in vain ! However, I managed to influence a British who married a local, to take over their a small 10 rooms resort for lease as they had financial problems running the resort. Both agreed and they went back to live in London. After 8 months running the resort, the husband had heart attack and died in Indonesia. His wife came back and insisted to take back the resort, as I was not paying her according to the agreement. I have no choice but to gave up the resort. It was my faults for not paying her promptly as I spent most of my money repairing the resort. At that time, I had my trainee staff who was in love with me. She quitted studying in a college as she wanted to do a full time job with me. As I was not coming home and negleted my 1st wife and my children, my 1st wife then filed a divorce against me. It took 3 years my divorce case to be settled.
Lady Luck still with me !! At that time, I managed to get a bigger resort for lease a 40 rooms resort that been abandoned for 3 years. I met up with the owner, and agreed to run the resort for a 5 years contract and he also agreed that the resort will be sold to me after 5 years. I took over the resort, and married my trainee staff who was at that time 18 years old and I was at my 40's !!! We ran the resort together short handed as we can't afford to employ other staff. Her parents , brothers came to help when needed.
With limited fund in hand, we cleaned up the resort, repainted and repaired a lot of things. My father in-law with his kampong friends helped to do repair works as the resort was of wooden structures. Lucky again, while repairing the resort, a man came and wanted to book all 40 rooms for 30 days !! His company was awarded to repair a factory a "total shut down" . I told him that we were just taken over and still under repair and he insisted to take all the rooms and willing to pay a 50% deposit. Thanks GOD !!! it was a RM 80,000 revenue for me!!! and 50% is RM40,000!!! very good start for me. With the deposit I spent on all the repair works, changed aircondition, bought few mattress & beds , lightings, etc etc. The resort looked a brand new !
After few months, my new wife was pregnant. I was excited and at the same time missed my ex wife and all my five children. I had a mixed feeling a happy new family at one side and a very sad one on other side of me. But life is such , you cannot have all on your side.
The resort's business was encouraging. Old customers came back as they saw the new look of the resort. At the same time, the resort was situated quite close to Kuantan Port and Factories at Gebeng. We catered holiday makers on weekend and business men on weekdays. At that time, we can afford to employ few staff to take care of reception counter and few room maids. I was still working hard to ensure all areas were in tip top conditions.
Time goes by... my wife was in pain at 4 am and sent her to the private hospital and was detained. It was only at 10.07 am she delivered a beautiful baby girl. I didn't have much money at that time as the money always spent for other repair works and maintenance of the resort and had to look for few friends to help. I had registered my wife at private hospital thinking that I will have some payment when time comes. The general hospital would be very cheap but then I had made the arrangements there. I have to be responsible and look for the money. I didn't want to let her down furthermore her family has been thinking that I was a rich man - a resort's owner. I wanted to keep it up !!!
Our marriage was a loving one for the first 2 years. My father and mother in laws came to visit us every weekend. I was happy to see them coming to visit their first grand daughter. But then, when they came, there actually a lot of bad mouthing me. They always reminded their daughter@my wife to grap quickly whatever I have, change business name, property if any because marrying an old man like me will have risks. Furthermore I have another 5 children with my ex-wife. Being a young and a pamperred daughter, she listened to their advise with mixed feeling. One day, my wife told me that she felt bored staying at home and wanted to study back at local college. I have no reasons to stop her, furthermore she's still young and we have employed a maid to look after our daughter.
The day came, when she started her study at the college. For few months, she was in a very good mood of studying. She had her own kancil to go to college. However, after few months I saw her changing her attitude. She used to come back early but went out again, coming back late, sometimes taken our daughter along. She went to see her boyfriend with our daughter, claiming that she is her niece. We had talks but she always claimed to be tired with her class and wanted to concentrate on her study.
After a year in college, I saw her a different person. She kept on talking about her friends in college, a young Sarawakian boy and many more. She even told me that many student wanted to ask her for a date etc. I used to remind her that she was married (not knowning that she registered as single in college) . One day she went out. It was already 11.00 pm. I tried to contact her but she off the mobile phone. Her father was at the resort at that time and worried. He started the car and went out looking for her. Couldn't find her, he came back. 15 minutes later she came back and the father scolded her. I just kept quiet. She claimed that she went to play bowling with girlfriends (but later I found out that she had a date with a Sarawakian to another beach) I had confronted this boy and he told no lie !!! he didn't know that she was married to an old man !
I was still not suspicious of my wife, I trusted her. However, one day when I reach home I saw a note on our make up table. She asked for apology as she wanted to stay with her parents. She didn't want to be with me again. I called her and try to comfort her, but she asked for times to be alone with her parents. She took our daughter along. After few days I went to her parents house which is about 1 hour drive and asked her to come back but she refused. We had an arguement and the parents involved. At dawn, I went back home alone, the car broke down at the middle of the Felda and there was no lights. I fell asleep in the car until morning. it was a month of Ramadhan. Later someone called a formen and repaired the car.
After few months, I have done a lot of talking but she still refused to come home. Instead she registered herself to stay at the college hostel ( to get closer to her boyfriend). Our daughter was left with her parents. after about six months, she was not coming home, I decided to divorce her. I was left alone at home and the maid was sent back. At that time, I was also involved with MLM to keep me busy. People in the MLM knew my story, a succesful businessman like me is no problem mixing with people. Out of hundred people, there was a lady, a small size daughter of an Iman who was interested in me. We began courting and planned to get married. But one day, my exwife called and wanted to see me. We met, and she regretted for what she done to me. She wanted to come back to me for the sake of our daughter. It was a Valentine day and her "edah" was few days away. We decided to "Rujuk" and she came to live with me again. We had to look for another maid to look after our daughter.
After she completed her course, she was sent for practical trainnning at a Developer Company. I bought her a new Gen 2, as her 22nd birthday present. The money I got from my business and my KWSP withdrawal. I bought a second-hand BMW 523i and given my Perdana car to her parents. Live seemed to be OK.
But on one Saturday, while I was having lunch with my friend my wife called. I told her that I shall be back after lunch. She asked me why I didn't visit my girlfriend at the hospital? I was angry with the question as I don't have anyone except her. She told me that she read a message in my phone ("Abang saya kat hospital, darah rendah. Pinjam RM200"). I told her that I was not aware of the message as she had opened it up earlier while I was sleeping. When I looked at the message, I realised that the message came from a lady of computer shop whom I knew when I sent my computer for repair.. She get my number from the receipt and sms me if I could help her as she had no one to help. I explained to my wife, she didn't believe it and she sounded upset.
After lunch, I drove back to our house which was just at the back of our resort. A typical Malay style house facing the beach. I was shocked it was so quite. I asked my "BIBIK" where were my wife and daughter and she replied "Sudah Cabut Dengan Banyak Barang2 dalam Kereta) I tried to contact her but she turned off the phone. I called her parents but was told they didn't know anything. Only after 3 days that I managed to speak to her. She was in Kuala Lumpur staying with her brother and she had decided to leave me again. After one week, she came back to Kuantan, but straight to her parents' house. I told her that I wanted to come but her parents didn't allow me to. I gave her a dateline to come home, if she didn't come home after the dateline, just considered that I have divorce her. So it was far past the dateline, I have to divorce her again !!!
Three months after that, I have been trying to talk to my daughter, but at all times the answer was my daughter was either not at home or playing with neighbours's children away from home. They didn't allow me to speak to my daughter .I was frusterated with what they had been doing. I went to her house one day, trying to see my daughter, but was told that my daughter was not around. Then my exwife called her parents, saying that I could see my daughter with her in Kuantan. So I drove back to Kuantan. After a brief discussions, I managed to take my daughter to our house, but later my ex wife called that she also wanted to take my daughter to Telok Cempedak Beach and I can join together. I have to send her back to her rented house. When I reach the house, she quickly pulled my daughter's hand and ran inside and locked the door leaving me confused. She cheated me !!
I tried to hold the door's grill but she then ran to the kitchen and threatened me with a knife. To avoid further happenings, I just reported to the police and 3 days later she was sent to lockup for few days. The case was closed as I didn't want further action. Few days later, I received a cheque from a company for payment due and went to the bank. I was shocked that the company account had been closed as the company was registered under her name. I was frusterated. I don't have any money in hand. To make it worse, the TNB came next day and cut the electricity, the resort was in darkness and I have to stay with a friend. I couldn't find any source of money. To Along ohhh !, bukan mau tolong!!. I left the resort for few days, sent the staff back home. The resort was empty. When I came back to the resort after few days, I noticed that most of the aircondition compressers are stolen, the copper pipes were gone. The rooms were opened and few TV were missing. Oh God !!! why these happened to me? And I thought it was going to be my final nail to my coffin !!
As I needed money badly, I gave my BMW to a friend for a loan of RM5,000, but later when I wanted to take back the car he asked for RM7,000, hell, I didn't know he was also a Malay along!!!. I can't afford RM7,000 and decided to give it to him furthermore the car was overdues for 3 months. I was left without a car, and asked my friend to look after the resort. He was willing to pay for all the expenses of TNB, bought the new compressor for the aircondition, and repair whatever damaged, but with one condition that he wanted to run the resort until he get back his money with a little profit. I have no choice. But my greedy friend went to the resort owner and told him that I had big problems with money, and he wanted to run the resort. The owner insisted that I must pay whatever dues, giving me one week notice, failing which he will give it to my friend. And he did!! I left with nothing !!! Just immagine after 5 years of hard work, to built back the resort, other people just took it easily. I asked for some compensation, but the owner refused saying that I owed him more than what I have spent.
I have decided to get out of Kuantan. But before that I must take my daughter. I made a police report saying that I didn't want my daughter to be with my ex in-laws. So I went to her kindergarten and took her with me. I have taught them a lesson !!! DON'T PLAY PLAY WITH ME !! Next few days, the news was in a newspaper ! I just ignored it, they just can't do anything.
Now after three years, I still have nothing much to be proud of !!!! (except my children!!!) and my friend's business :
